How Oxygen Scavenger Protects Boiler Feedwater Systems

Dissolved oxygen in boiler feedwater is one of the main causes of pitting corrosion in economisers, feed lines and boiler tubes. Even a few parts per billion, held over months of operation, is enough to perforate tube walls and shorten the life of a steam plant.

Why chemical oxygen scavenging is needed

Mechanical deaeration removes the bulk of dissolved oxygen, but it rarely gets the residual below 7–15 ppb. A chemical oxygen scavenger is dosed after the deaerator to mop up that residual and to hold a protective reserve through the feed system.

How Muscat Chemical Oxygen Scavenger works

Our oxygen scavenger reacts rapidly with dissolved oxygen to form stable, non-scaling by-products, and it passivates metal surfaces so that magnetite rather than haematite forms on the tube wall. It is suitable for low, medium and high pressure boilers and is compatible with common feedwater treatment programmes.

Dosing and control

Dose continuously into the feedwater storage section and trim to hold a small measurable reserve at the boiler inlet. Confirm performance with regular dissolved oxygen and reserve tests, and review the programme whenever load or make-up rates change.
