Choosing a Heavy-Duty Degreaser for Marine and Workshop Use

A degreaser is only as good as its match to the soil and the surface. Picking the wrong one wastes product, slows the job and can damage coatings or seals.

Know the soil first

Light oil films lift with a general-purpose alkaline cleaner. Baked-on carbon, heavy grease and bitumen need a stronger solvent-boosted degreaser with dwell time. For engine rooms and bilges, choose a product that emulsifies so the residue can be pumped and separated rather than smeared.

Check the surface

Aluminium, galvanised steel and painted panels need a pH-controlled formula; a strong caustic cleaner will etch or discolour them. Always test on a small area and rinse fully.

Dilution and contact time

Most concentrates work best at 1:10 to 1:40 with five to ten minutes of contact before agitation. Hotter water speeds the reaction — but keep below the product’s flash point if it is solvent-boosted.
