Titanium dioxide, also known as titanium(IV) oxide or titania, is the inorganic compound with the chemical formula TiO ₂. When used as a pigment, it is called titanium white, Pigment White 6, or CI 77891. It is a white, water-insoluble solid, although mineral forms can appear black.
Titanium dioxide works as a UV filtering ingredient in sunscreen – it helps protect a person's skin by blocking absorption of the sun's ultraviolet light that can cause sunburn and is also linked to skin cancer.
