Use. Tetrasodium pyrophosphate is used as a buffering agent, an emulsifier, a dispersing agent, and a thickening agent, and is often used as a food additive.Potassium pyrophosphate is mainly used as an emulsifier, quality improver and metal ion chelating agent. It can be found in herbicidal compositions as a spray adjuvant. It is also used as an anionic dispersant in water-based (latex) paints.

The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort.
