Phenylmercuric acetate is an organomercury compound. This compound was formerly used as a preservative in paints, and as a disinfectant.

PHENYLMERCURIC acetate (PMA) has been widely used as a fungicide and as a disinfectant. It is well known that the antibacterial action of mercuric compounds results chiefly from their interference with essential sulphydryl groups of organisms.

This chemical is used as a fungicide, herbicide and algicide. It is found in antibiotic eye drops, eye cosmetics, shampoos and paints.
