Also known as

Red mercuric oxide is used industrially as an Abrasive and as a biological growth inhibitor in marine paints.

It is also used as a colorant for ceramic glazes.

Note

Light sensitive. Incompatible with hypophosphoric acid, fuels, strong oxidizing agents, strong reducing agents, combustible materials, organic materials and phenols.

HgO is sometimes used in the production of mercury as it decomposes quite easily. When it decomposes, oxygen gas is generated. It is also used as a material for cathodes in mercury batteries.
